St. Cloud’s public, private, and charter schools are respected, top-rated, award-winning schools. The Osceola County Public School System recently received a $1 million grant that will provide funding for the enhanced training of teachers in order to improve the academic achievement of students in math and science. For higher education, St. Cloud features nationally-ranked and esteemed local colleges and universities. The University of Central Florida is an institution well-reputed for its College of Business, College of Education, and Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy. Rollins College is a private four-year liberal arts college. Valencia Community College is a two-year program featuring AA certificate programs among other useful certifications.
Economy and Job Market
St. Cloud’s Chamber of Commerce is working hard to attract more businesses and services to the city and stimulate the economy. The city will soon become home to a bustling biomedical industry. The prospective University of Central Florida Medical School, Nemours Children’s Hospital, the Burnham Institute, a new Veteran’s Hospital, the University of Florida Research Center, and the MD Anderson Cancer Institute will all be located just ten minutes north of St. Cloud. Therefore, St. Cloud’s Chamber of Commerce is promoting seminars, job training sessions, and scholarships in order to prepare a qualified workforce for the future openings in biomedical careers.
Attractions and Points of Interest
St. Cloud has no end of attractions and activities for the whole family. Historic St. Cloud Main Street is a shopping and dining district that is drenched in history while geared to provide entertainment for the contemporary crowd. The restaurants in St. Cloud, in general, are a refreshing change from what you usually find in the area.
The St. Cloud Heritage Museum displays fascinating photographs, paintings, postcards, and authentic artifacts for all to enjoy. There is a Veteran’s Memorial Park near the historic St. Cloud Main Street area, where many former St. Cloud residents were buried. And of course, just a few minutes west in Kissimmee, you’ll find Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios while in Tampa you can celebrate Oktoberfest every weekend at Busch Gardens.
Parks and Recreation
Residents of St. Cloud are surrounded by five lakes and are only an hour away from the Gulf of Mexico. Naturally, most of the sports and recreational activities revolve around water. Boats, skis, and skimboards can be found all about. Lake Tohopekaliga, nicknamed Big Toho, is the best place for skiing and bass fishing in Central Florida and is also a great place to rent canoes and kayaks. This is also a popular site for family vacations, as there are many cabins available for rent.
The lakefront St. Cloud Marina is a beautiful site with 140 boat slips and a clubhouse. There are plenty of recreational activities available on land as well. The Extreme Sports Complex, located in town, offers a skate park, inline street course, Trick Bike park and BMX track. If you’re looking to join in team sports or just have your own custom workout, the Civic Center Complex has it all. It features two 10,000 square-foot gyms, a bath house, a solar-heated pool pavilion, ball field complex, five acres of multi-purpose fields, and covered horseshoe courts.
